Janaprabha College Ramtek is affiliated with Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University (KKSU), established by the State Government of Maharashtra, since the academic year 2022-23. Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University was founded on 18 September 1997, and it is named in honor of the legendary Sanskrit poet, Mahakavi Kalidas. Located in Ramtek, within the Nagpur District—the second capital of Maharashtra—KKSU holds the distinction of being the first Sanskrit University in the state, dedicated to the advanced learning of Sanskrit.
History of Establishment
The inception of KKSU is deeply rooted in the vision of former Prime Minister of India, P.V. Narasimha Rao, a distinguished Sanskrit scholar. He recognized the rich tradition of Sanskrit learning in Maharashtra and was keen on establishing an independent Sanskrit University in the state. Encouraged by Mr. Rao, the late Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Sudhakarraoji Naik, took up the initiative and appointed Dr. Shrikant Jichkar as a one-member committee to study and report on the establishment of a Sanskrit University in Maharashtra. Dr. Jichkar’s report, along with a draft of a non-formal University act, laid the groundwork for the university’s establishment. Subsequently, the Government of Maharashtra, under the leadership of Chief Minister Hon’ble Shri Manoharrao Joshi, formed a committee of Sanskrit scholars and educationists. Based on their recommendations, the State Government established Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University on 18 September 1997 in Ramtek, named after the national poet of India, Kalidasa.
A Blend of Traditional and Modern Education
KKSU offers a diverse range of academic programs including Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.), and Ph.D. degrees. What makes KKSU unique is its innovative academic programs and curriculum, which adopt a modern approach to the Sanskrit language while preserving traditional Sanskrit studies. The university offers coursework in classical subjects such as Veda, Vedanta, Vyakarana, Nyaya, Mimamsa, Dharmashastra, and Sahitya, alongside modern subjects. It also emphasizes the study of science and technology in ancient India, which is extensively documented in old Sanskrit texts.
Every course at KKSU includes Sanskrit as a compulsory subject, taught in combination with contemporary subjects like Travel Tourism, Hospitality Studies, Journalism, Yoga, and Foreign Languages. The university has also innovatively integrated the I.A.S. M.P.S.C. curriculum into a Civil Services Degree Course, with Sanskrit as an important subject, providing students with a dual advantage.
